Imam Ali (AS):
"Whenever someone does good to you, remind yourself of it and whenever you do good [to someone], forget it."
Mustadrak al-Wasail, Vol. 12, P. 361
To remind yourself of the good things that you have done would be tantamount to boasting and conferring an obligation upon others. However, reminding yourself of the good things others have done for you would be a kind of appreciation and gratefulness. The former would lead to resentment or at the least embarrassment but the latter brings about affection and attachment.
