Over 1,400 years ago, whenever a newborn child was brought to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), he would chew a date until it was soft and then rub a piece of it onto the palate of the baby.
This Sunnah (prophetic practice) is called Tahneek.

This is one of the reasons why Muslims follow the Sunnah of the Messenger (pbuh) without questioning it.
